Week 7 Predictions
Week 7 is here, and the Brevard County high school football season continues to heat up. With district positioning, momentum, and bragging rights on the line, several teams have opportunities to make a statement this Friday night. This week’s schedule features three matchups that deserve the spotlight: Melbourne vs. Viera, Melbourne Central Catholic vs. Rockledge, and Space Coast vs. Astronaut. With three featured games, plenty of other intriguing matchups, and several teams taking a much-needed week off, there is no shortage of storylines heading into Friday night. Let’s get into the Week 7 picks!
#4 Melbourne (3-2) vs #8 Viera (3-2); This is a major Brevard County showdown between two programs looking to establish themselves as the season moves into October. Both teams enter with identical 3-2 records, making this an important opportunity to gain momentum and make a statement.
Melbourne’s Key Players; The Bulldogs have a difference-maker in sophomore running back Tyrese Jefferson, who is averaging 217.8 rushing yards per game and has scored 10 touchdowns. His ability to control the ground game will be critical against a Viera defense that must keep him from breaking into the secondary. Senior wide receiver Jeremiah Thomas gives Melbourne another offensive option, while linebacker Jace Richardson has been a major presence defensively, averaging 11.5 tackles per game.
Viera Key Players; The Hawks will look to So QB Jaamal Crittington, who leads the team with eight passing touchdowns and is also averaging 79.6 rushing yards per game. Senior receiver Mason Strater provides a downfield target, averaging 47.3 receiving yards per game. Defensively, senior Paul Hanna has been a tackling leader, while sophomore Derek Schmadeke has recorded six sacks. Viera will need its defensive front to disrupt Jefferson and force Melbourne into passing situations. The matchup: Melbourne wants to establish its running game, while Viera needs to make the Bulldogs defend the entire field. The battle between Jefferson and Viera’s defensive front could determine the outcome. PREDICTION: MELBOURNE BY 14
#6 MCC(4-1) vs #11 Rockledge (1-4) The Hustlers have several players who can make an impact. Senior receiver Grady Bonenberger leads the team with 100 receiving yards per game. Senior running back/linebacker Noah Gabriel is averaging 52.7 rushing yards per game. So QB Trent Washington will be an important piece of the offensive attack, while the defense is led by junior linebacker Will Warren, who is leads the county in Tackles averaging 15 per game. Senior Ty Goetsch has also contributed 6 sacks.
Rockledge’s challenge; The Raiders need to find offensive consistency and protect the football. Sophomore receiver Matthew Ford is a player to watch, averaging 32.3 receiving yards per game. Junior quarterback Carter Kemmerling has two passing touchdowns, and Jr LB Vondexter Tyler leads the defensive effort with 10 tackles per game.
The matchup: MCC has demonstrated the ability to produce points and get stops defensively. Rockledge will need to control the line of scrimmage, establish its running game, and avoid giving the Hustlers short fields. This is an opportunity for Rockledge to show improvement, but MCC’s balance and defensive production present a difficult challenge.
#12 Space Coast (5-1) at #13 Astronaut (2-3); This is an intriguing matchup featuring two programs heading in different directions in the standings. Space Coast enters at 5-1 and has been putting together an impressive offensive season. Astronaut, meanwhile, has an opportunity to use its home-field advantage to change the direction of its season.
Space Coast’s playmakers; The Vipers have some exciting young talent. Senior wide receiver Kadyn Thomas is averaging 68yds per game and has 408yds on the season.
Freshman standout Charlie Williams has been making an impact on both sides of the football. He leads Space Coast with 11 total touchdowns, averages 61.8 rushing yards per game, and has recorded six sacks. That type of two-way production gives the Vipers a player who can change a game in multiple ways.
Astronaut’s opportunity; The War Eagles will need a complete team effort to defend their home field. Senior Adarian Dotson, senior Ricky Kelly, and junior Maleek Thomas are among the players on the Astronaut roster to watch as the War Eagles look to generate more offensive production. Astronaut will need to establish the run, avoid costly turnovers, and find ways to limit Space Coast’s explosive playmakers.
The matchup: Space Coast has the offensive firepower, but playing in Titusville adds another challenge. Astronaut will need to make this a physical game and keep the Vipers from getting comfortable offensively. I’m looking for Astronaut to make this one interesting and use its home-field advantage to pull off a statement victory. PREDICTION UPSET ALERT: Astronaut by 3
