The O-Dome gets a heavyweight district showdown Thursday night when the undefeated #1 Merritt Island Mustangs (5-0) host the #2 Titusville Terriers (4-1) in a game with major implications for the District 3A-8 race. This is a matchup between two teams that have established themselves as legitimate contenders. Merritt Island enters unbeaten and averaging 42.8 points per game, while Titusville is coming off a dominant 46-7 victory over Harmony and has won four of its first five games. Titusville is averaging 363.6 total yards per game, making this a matchup between two offenses capable of creating big plays. At the center of the Mustang attack is senior quarterback Kevin Verpaele. who has put together a remarkable statistical season:68-of-98 passing 1,335 yards 11TD, 2 INT, 140.9 QBR Rating, 27 carries 205 yards 6 TD. That gives Verpaele 1,540 yards of combined passing and rushing production and 17 total touchdowns entering the Titusville game. MaxPreps currently lists Verpaele as the District 3A-8 passing leader with 1,335 yards, while also ranking him fifth in rushing with 205 yards. The 6-foot-2, 197-pound quarterback is a nationally recruited Class of 2027 prospect. Rivals/On3 currently lists him as a USF commit, with an industry rating of 88.07 and rankings of No. 537 nationally, No. 32 at quarterback and No. 45 in Florida. ESPN’s current Florida Class of 2027 rankings list Verpaele at No. 47 with a grade of 78. Against Titusville, Verpaele’s ability to make the correct read may be the biggest factor in the game.

ZAYLAN CHAPPLE: BREVARD’S MOST IMPROVED PLAYER? One of the biggest stories surrounding Merritt Island this season has been the emergence of Cocoa transfer Jr RB Zaylan Chapple. The numbers are hard to ignore. Zaylan Chapple 48 carries 530 rushing yards 6TD, 12 receptions 192 receiving yards 2TD. That’s 722 yards of total offense and 8 touchdowns. Chapple is currently the District 3A-8 rushing leader with 530 yards, and his eight total touchdowns rank second in the district. MaxPreps has already highlighted Chapple’s impact this season, including his 89-yard, two-touchdown performance in Merritt Island’s opening-night victory over Cocoa. The most important development may be what Chapple’s emergence does to the entire Merritt Island offense. Defenses cannot simply sit back and defend Verpaele.cIf they load the box to stop Chapple, Verpaele has opportunities to attack one-on-one coverage with a talented receiving group that includes Elijah Mitchell, DeShaun Thomas and Timothy Sedaros. If defenses back off? Chapple has already demonstrated that he can make them pay.

THE MUSTANG RECEIVING ATTACK; So WR Elijah Mitchell has emerged as one of Merritt Island’s leading receiving threats. MaxPreps currently lists Mitchell with 390 receiving yards, second in District 3A-8, while Sr TE DeShaun Thomas has 256 yards and So WR Timothy Sedaros has 242. That balance makes Merritt Island difficult to defend. The Terriers have to account for Verpaele’s arm, Chapple’s running ability, Mitchell’s explosive receiving, Thomas’ size at tight end, Sedaros’ ability to stretch the field, and that’s before considering the rest of the Mustang roster.

TITUSVILLE: THE TERRIERS ARE COMING Titusville enters the O-Dome at 4-1, with its only loss coming against Spruce Creek. The Terriers have responded by winning two straight games, including a convincing 46-7 victory over Harmony last week. While much of the attention will be on Verpaele and Chapple, Titusville has plenty of firepower of its own. Sr QB REMY VIGNE has been extremely efficient for the Terriers. MaxPreps lists Vigne with 750 passing yards, while Space Coast Daily reported that he threw for 277 yards and five touchdowns against Harmony. That means Merritt Island cannot simply sell out to stop Titusville’s running game. Vigne has shown he can make defenses pay through the air. ELIJAH “TANK” HARVEY If there is one player Merritt Island’s defense has to locate on every snap, it is senior Elijah “Tank” Harvey. Harvey is one of the Terriers’ most dynamic offensive weapons and has produced 365 rushing yards and 348 receiving yards, according to the current District 3A-8 statistical leaders. He also has nine total touchdowns. Against Harmony, Harvey exploded for 115 receiving yards and two touchdowns on only two receptions. That’s the type of big-play ability that can change a game in seconds. Merritt Island’s defense cannot allow Harvey to get loose in space.

DEFENSE COULD DECIDE THIS ONE While both teams can score, the matchup may ultimately come down to which defense can create the critical stop. Merritt Island has several defensive leaders, including senior linebacker Alain Adams, who leads the team with 51 total tackles in the current District 3A-8 statistics. Senior defensive back Elijah Floyd has 44 tackles, while Titusville’s Van Russell has 43.Titusville also has senior linebacker Matthew Graham, who currently has three sacks. The Terriers’ defense has been one of the reasons they’ve remained competitive all season, allowing only 67 points through five games. Merritt Island has allowed 86.That statistic should not be overlooked.

THREE KEYS TO THE GAME. Can Titusville slow down Chapple? The Terriers have to prevent Chapple from consistently creating favorable down-and-distance situations. If Merritt Island gets into third-and-manageable situations all night, Verpaele will have too many options. Can Titusville pressure Verpaele? Verpaele’s numbers have been outstanding, but Titusville needs to make him uncomfortable. Pressure could force the Mustangs into longer-yardage situations and create opportunities for turnovers. Can Merritt Island contain Tank Harvey? Harvey is the type of player who can turn a routine play into a touchdown. If Merritt Island keeps Harvey from producing explosive plays and forces Titusville to sustain long drives, the Mustangs improve their chances of controlling the game.
