​Brevard County football is dominating the state tournament landscape, with four of the area’s powerhouses successfully navigating the opening round of the FHSAA playoffs. MCC, Cocoa, Eau Gallie, Merritt Island, and Viera all secured impressive wins in the Regional Quarterfinals last Friday, setting the stage for three high-stakes Regional Semifinal matchups this week across Classes 1A, 2A, 3A, and 6A Region 2.

MCC’s Uphill Climb: Hustlers Survive Quarterfinal, Face 1A Juggernaut​

Melbourne Central Catholic (MCC) has successfully navigated the first round of the FHSAA Class 1A Playoffs, keeping Brevard County’s playoff dreams alive in the smallest classification. However, the road gets significantly tougher immediately, as the Hustlers now face one of the state’s most dominant programs in the Regional Semifinals.​Class 1A Playoff Road: How MCC Got Here​The Melbourne Central Catholic Hustlers (3-7), ranked No. 14 in Florida Division 1A by MaxPreps, earned a tough home win to secure their spot in the next round.​

Regional Quarterfinal Recap​ The Hustlers hosted District 6 rival Orlando Christian Prep (OCP) last Friday. In a defensive struggle, MCC’s defense proved superior, holding OCP to a 21-4 victory.​

Key Stats: The MCC defense recorded three interceptions in the victory. Offensively, the ground game was crucial, with Noah Flores rushing for 164 yards (9.1 yards per carry), leading the team to a total of 210 rushing yards—a significant improvement from their early season average. This improved ground attack and defensive opportunism were the keys to punching their ticket.​

Regional Semifinal Matchup: Hustlers vs. Patriots​The No. 4 seeded Hustlers now face a massive challenge, traveling across the state to take on the undefeated No. 1 seed Carrollwood Day Patriots (Tampa) this Friday.

​The Mismatch: Carrollwood Day’s team comparison stats are staggering, showing a Total Yards/Game average of 501.8, nearly doubling MCC’s 282.5. They rely on an elite rushing attack led by K. Battle (170.5 rushing yards per game). Their defense is also one of the stingiest in the state, allowing only 10.6 points per game this season.​

Prediction: This is a true David vs. Goliath matchup. While MCC’s recent commitment to the run game is promising, Carrollwood Day is too powerful and complete on both sides of the ball. The Patriots will likely advance comfortably. Carrollwood Day wins (42-10).

​Class 2A Region 2: The Cocoa Juggernaut Faces a Clearwater Test

​The three-time reigning state champion, the Cocoa Tigers (6-4), demonstrated why they remain a favorite despite a challenging regular season schedule, rolling over the No. 6 seeded Newberry Panthers in the Regional Quarterfinal.

​The No. 3 seed Tigers hosted Newberry and delivered a commanding 42-13 victory. The high-powered offense, led by star QB Champ Smith (1,694 passing yards this season), was efficient going 20/30 287yds 4TD, along side RB Zaylan Chapple’s 12car 115yds TD, and capitalizing on the Darkside defense that held Newberry in check all night. The win proved that Cocoa (ranked No. 48 overall in Florida and No. 1 in Class 2A by MaxPreps) has hit their stride at the perfect time.

​Second Round Matchup: Cocoa vs. Calvary Christian

​Cocoa now travels to face the formidable No. 2 seed Calvary Christian Warriors (Clearwater) in what is arguably the biggest game in Region 2. Calvary Christian is another perennial contender known for its tough defense and balanced attack.

Prediction: The Tigers have seen tougher opponents during the regular season and are historically built for November football. Expect Cocoa’s championship pedigree to shine through in a close battle, propelling them to the Regional Final.

​Class 3A Region 2: The Battle for the Island Causeway

​The second round of the 3A Region 2 playoffs provides the marquee matchup of the week for Brevard County as two fierce local rivals collide again: the District Champion Eau Gallie Commodores and the Merritt Island Mustangs.

​How They Got Here: Quarterfinal Recaps

  • ​Eau Gallie (8-3): The No. 5 ranked team in Class 3A and top seed in District 8 dominated their first-round game, pitching a 26-0 shutout against the Tavares Bulldogs. The Commodores relied on a powerful ground game led by freshman X’Zavier Corbin (averaging over 100 rushing yards per game) and a defense that continues to impress.
  • ​Merritt Island (7-4): The Mustangs, the No. 8 ranked team in Class 3A, secured their spot by beating local foe Titusville, 41-13, in a strong showing at home. Their offense saw significant production, with QB Kevin Verpaele going 14/17 accumulating 320 passing yards in the win.

​Second Round Matchup: Eau Gallie vs. Merritt Island

​This Regional Semifinal is a rematch of an earlier regular season contest where Eau Gallie prevailed over Merritt Island, demonstrating defensive superiority. This time, the stakes are exponentially higher, with a trip to the Regional Final on the line.

Prediction: While Merritt Island is playing its best football, Eau Gallie’s defensive consistency and rushing attack have been relentless. The Commodores hold the edge in a close, hard-hitting rivalry game.

​Class 6A Region 2: Viera Faces a Regional Gauntlet

​The Viera Hawks (7-4) punched their ticket to the Regional Semifinals with a convincing road victory, earning the right to face one of the state’s 6A titans.

​Viera’s offense was explosive in their 6A Region 2 Quarterfinal, dismantling Riverview, 54-13. The Hawks relied heavily on SR QB Eric Nelson( 93/144 1231yds 13TD, 126car782 8TD) and Jr RB Duke Butler, who not only leads the team in rushing yards per game (92.5) but also drives their scoring efficiency, proving they can win outside of Brevard County.

​Second Round Matchup: Viera vs. Armwood

​Viera now travels to face the No. 10 ranked team in all of Florida and a regional top seed: the Armwood Hawks (Seffner). Armwood enters the game undefeated (10-0) and is considered a top contender for the 6A state title.

Prediction: Viera’s playoff run is a great achievement, but facing an unbeaten and highly-ranked team like Armwood, who is a perennial state championship threat, is a monumental task. Armwood’s depth and defensive speed will likely be too much for the Hawks on the road.
